Newport's Denim Empire
Newport is known for our beautiful mansions - especially The Vanderbilt family's summer estate, The Breakers. newportFILM recently showed the documentary "Nothing Left Unsaid" featuring Gloria Vanderbilt and her son, Anderson Cooper, at the Breakers. In case you missed the awesome event, HBO is currently airing it.
At Laura Jean, we do not only love Gloria Vanderbilt because of her beauty and amazing character, but because she is also known as the first designer of premium denim!
In 1976, Indian fashion company Murjani paired with Gloria Vanderbilt to create her own line of denim. Vanderbilt's denim featured her signature on the back pockets and her famous gold swan logo on the front pocket. She broke boundaries by also being one of the first designers to make public appearances. Her famous denim brand eventually expanded and introduced blouses, sheets, leather goods, and more.
Her denim was a high-waisted fit and stretch for the perfect, comfortable fit. She went on to sell millions of designer denim before eventually selling her rights of the company to her partner, Murjani designs.
